13 Cards Rummy Rules

Objective

13 Cards Rummy is the most popular rummy variant in India. The goal is to arrange all 13 cards into valid sets and sequences, with at least one pure sequence, and make a valid declaration before your opponents.

Basic Rules
  • Each player receives 13 cards from two standard decks of cards and two printed Joker cards.
  • Form at least two sequences, including one pure sequence (without jokers) which is mandatory.
  • Remaining cards can be grouped into valid sets or additional sequences.
  • A sequence is three or more consecutive cards of the same suit.
  • A set is three or four cards of the same rank but different suits.
  • A valid declaration must have all 13 cards arranged in proper sequences and sets.
Sequences and Sets
  • Pure Sequence: A group of three or more consecutive cards of the same suit without any Joker card.
  • Impure Sequence: A sequence formed using a Joker (wild card or printed) to replace missing card(s).
  • Set: Three or four cards of the same rank but different suits. A set can include Jokers.
  • Ace Rules: Ace can be used as the highest card (A♦️, K♦️, Q♦️) or the lowest card (A♠️, 2♠️, 3♠️) but cannot be in the middle.
Joker Cards
  • Two types of Jokers: Printed Jokers and Wild Card Jokers.
  • Wild Card Joker is randomly selected at the beginning of each game.
  • Jokers can replace any card in sequences or sets, except in a pure sequence.
  • Multiple Jokers can be used in a single set or impure sequence.
How to Play
  1. Draw a card from the closed or open deck on your turn.
  2. Arrange your cards to form valid sequences and sets.
  3. Discard one card to the open deck at the end of your turn.
  4. Continue until you can declare with all cards grouped validly.
  5. To make a valid declaration, you must have at least one pure sequence and one more sequence (pure or impure).
  6. Declare to win and let the system validate your hand instantly.
Card Values
  • Face cards (K, Q, J) and Ace = 10 points each
  • Number cards (2-10) = Face value
  • Jokers = 0 points

Points Rummy Rules

Objective

Points Rummy is a fast-paced, single-deal rummy format where each point has a pre-decided monetary value. The player who makes a valid declaration first wins the cash based on opponents' points.

Key Features
  • Quickest rummy format, ideal for instant play.
  • One deal, one winner per game.
  • Points are calculated based on unmatched cards.
  • Drop and middle drop penalties apply for early exit.
  • Games typically last 5-10 minutes, perfect for quick sessions.
Scoring
  • The winner receives cash equal to the total points of all losing players, multiplied by the point value of the table.
  • If a player drops out at the beginning (first drop), they lose 20 points.
  • If a player drops in the middle of the game (middle drop), they lose 40 points.
  • If a player makes an invalid declaration, they lose 80 points.
Card Values
  • Face cards (K, Q, J) and Ace = 10 points each
  • Number cards (2-10) = Face value (2=2 points, 3=3 points, etc.)
  • Jokers = 0 points
Example

If you're playing on a ₹2 per point table and your opponent has unmatched cards worth 30 points, you win ₹60 (30 points × ₹2). Similarly, if there are multiple players, you win the sum of all their points multiplied by the point value.

Pool Rummy Rules

Objective

Pool Rummy is a multi-deal format where players compete to stay below a fixed points limit. The last player remaining after others are eliminated wins the prize pool.

Variations
  • 101 Pool: Elimination occurs when a player reaches 101 points or more.
  • 201 Pool: Elimination occurs when a player reaches 201 points or more.
  • Players pay a fixed entry fee to join the game, creating the prize pool.
Gameplay Rules
  • Each deal is played like a regular rummy game with 13 cards.
  • Players need to form valid sequences and sets, including at least one pure sequence.
  • The winner of each deal scores zero points.
  • Losers accumulate points based on their unmatched cards.
  • Games continue until only one player remains below the point limit.
Scoring & Elimination
  • Losers add the value of unmatched cards to their score after each deal.
  • First drop: 20 points penalty; Middle drop: 40 points penalty.
  • Invalid declaration: 80 points penalty (or 60 in 61 Pool format).
  • Players exceeding the point limit (101 or 201) are eliminated from the game.
  • The last player remaining wins the entire prize pool.
Card Values
  • Face cards (K, Q, J) and Ace = 10 points each
  • Number cards (2-10) = Face value
  • Jokers = 0 points

Deals Rummy Rules

Objective

Deals Rummy is played for a fixed number of deals (usually 2, 3, or 6). The player with the highest chips at the end of all deals is declared the winner.

Key Features
  • Pre-decided number of deals (2/3/6 deals).
  • Chips are distributed equally at the start; chips are won or lost in each deal.
  • Each deal is played like a regular 13-card rummy game.
  • Drop penalties: 20 points for first drop, 40 for middle drop.
  • Invalid declaration penalty: 80 points.
  • Winner is the player with the most chips after all deals.
Gameplay Process
  1. Players start with an equal number of chips.
  2. In each deal, players try to form valid sequences and sets with their 13 cards.
  3. The winner of each deal collects points from other players based on their unmatched cards.
  4. After the pre-decided number of deals, the player with the most chips wins.
Scoring System
  • The winner of each deal receives chips from other players based on their unmatched card points.
  • If a player drops out at the beginning (first drop), they lose 20 points.
  • If a player drops in the middle of the game (middle drop), they lose 40 points.
  • If a player makes an invalid declaration, they lose 80 points.
Winning Criteria

The player with the maximum chips at the end of all deals wins. In case of a tie, the player who won the last deal is the winner.

Tips to Win Online Rummy

Prioritize creating a pure sequence first

To make a valid declaration, the first and foremost requirement is forming a pure sequence. A pure sequence is a sequence in which no card is replaced by a joker. Even if you have multiple jokers, prioritize creating a pure sequence first. It's always advisable to drop out if you don't spot a pure sequence after sorting your cards.

Observe your opponents' moves

Keep an eye on your opponents' moves to guess their cards. Observe the cards they pick from the open deck and the cards they discard. This can give you valuable insights into what sequences or sets they might be forming.

Discard high-value cards early

If high-value cards in your hand can't be used to form a sequence or a set, discard them as soon as possible. By doing so, if an opponent declares before you, you will not lose by a high margin. Remember that face cards (K, Q, J) and Ace are worth 10 points each.

Trick your opponents

A smart strategy in rummy is to confuse your opponents and trick them into discarding cards that you need. You can trick your opponents by discarding cards close to the sequence you are forming. For example, if you have 5❤, 6❤, and 8❤ in your hand, you can discard 8❤ to make your opponent discard 7❤ if they have that.

Prefer picking cards from the closed deck

It's wise to avoid picking cards from the open deck unless it's the final card needed for a sequence or set. Picking from the open deck can give your opponents clues about your hand, reducing your chances of winning. Maintain the element of surprise by drawing from the closed deck whenever possible.

Use jokers smartly

Jokers are versatile cards in rummy. They can be used to replace any other cards in a sequence or set, but remember that you also need a pure sequence without jokers. Use your joker cards wisely to form sets or sequences with high-value cards to reduce your points if an opponent declares first.

Know when to drop

After sorting the cards, players can take the first drop when there are no jokers or no sequences/sets are formed. Taking a first drop (20 points penalty) is better than continuing with a poor hand and risking a middle drop (40 points) or losing with all cards (80+ points). Knowing when to drop is a crucial skill in rummy.

Practice regularly

The more you practice and sharpen your skills by applying the rummy tips and tricks in a game, the better your performances will become. Practice is key. For beginners, it is always recommended to learn on free rummy games before moving to cash games.

Don't wait for the perfect cards

Don't wait for the perfect cards. Quickly make a move by reassessing and rearranging your hand to form a valid declaration at the earliest and win the rummy game. Being flexible with your strategy can often lead to quicker victories.

Patience is key

Remaining calm under pressure is crucial for clear thinking and avoiding costly mistakes. Rummy is a game of skill and requires logical and strategic thinking. To excel at rummy games, you must maintain your cool at all times and play your hand smartly.

While all these tips do not guarantee success, following them can help you improve your game strategy and increase your prospects of winning big in rummy games.
